SAN FRANCISCO — The Los Angeles Dodgers were hoping for incremental improvements out of Dustin May on Friday night.

Mike Trout homered for the eighth time in 10 games, and the Los Angeles Angels tripped up the Seattle Mariners’ AL wild-card run with an 8-7 victory that ended a four-game losing streak. He put the Angels ahead 5-3 with his 36th homer. Seattle dropped one game behind Toronto for the top AL wild card and remained a half-game in front of Tampa Bay. Luis Rengifo went deep from each side of the plate in his first career multihomer game. Rookie Julio Rodríguez led off with 27th homer, Carlos Santana went deep twice and Ty France homered.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — A defeat with the potential for a greater loss.

The Geelong Cats are back in the Australian Football League grand final and looking for their first Australian rules football title since 2011. The Cats advanced to the Sept. 24 grand final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground with a 71-point win over the Brisbane Lions — 8.12 (120) to 7.7 (49) — in front of 77,677 fans at the MCG. They’ll play either Collingwood or Sydney in the championship match. Those teams play Saturday in the other semifinal at Sydney. It will be Geelong’s second grand final appearance in three years, and the Cats will go into the match on a 15-game winning streak.

Four times Connecticut has faced elimination during this year’s WNBA playoffs and four times the Sun have responded with a convincing win to stay alive. The most convincing came Thursday night, when Connecticut bounced back from two losses in Las Vegas to rout the Aces 105-76 at home in Game 3 of the Finals, putting six players in double figures and outscoring Vegas 64-26 in the paint.  The margin of victory was the largest in a WNBA Finals elimination game. The Sun team will have to win two more elimination games, including Sunday at home, to take home the organization’s first WNBA title. Aces coach Becky Hammon says her team is ready to respond and prevent that.
