Toyota is recalling about 460,000 vehicles nationwide as they have a software glitch in their stability control systems. 

Toyota issued the noncompliance safety recall Apr. 13 on its website. 

The recall covers vehicles from the 2020 to 2022 model years, including the Toyota brand’s Venza, Mirai, RAV4 Hybrid, RAV4 Prime, Sienna Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid. Also included are the LS500h, LX600, NX350h and NX450h-plus from the Lexus luxury brand.

According to the notice, a software error can cause the Vehicle Stability Control system (VSC) not to default to ON the next time the car is started under certain circumstances. 

“This can result in a noncompliance with applicable regulations in the U.S.,” the notice says.

For all involved vehicles, Toyota and Lexus dealers will update the software of the Skid Control ECU free of charge to customers.

Owners of involved vehicles will be notified by the middle of June 2022.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

The recall comes on the same day that Toyota issued a recall for about 4,000 of its 2022 NX (including HEV, PHEV) vehicles in the United States. 

The recall notice says that the front shock absorbers in the affected vehicles are mounted to body panels that may be missing some spot-welds. 

“Incorrect welding could eventually cause a shock absorber to separate from the mounting area, resulting in a loss of driving stability and increasing the risk of a crash,” the recall notice says. 

For all involved vehicles, Lexus dealers will inspect the welding near the shock absorber mounting areas. 

For vehicles with missing spot-welds, Toyota is still developing a remedy for this condition and will notify owners after the remedy is developed, it says.

Owners of involved vehicles will be notified by the middle of June 2022.

Meanwhile, Toyota is fighting a class action alleging it didn’t tell customers its model year 2007-2014 FJ Cruiser vehicles have a dangerous defect that causes the vehicles’ frames to rust and corrode.
